South Beach Spotlight: Tropezón

Tropezón is an Andalusian-inspired gin and tapas bar located on the historic Española Way in South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida.

What Makes It Unique

Tropezón (which translates to “a stumble” or “to trip upon” in Spanish) is distinct for several reasons:

  • Gin-Centric Cocktail Program: The bar’s focus is on the Spanish tradition of the Gin & Tonic, featuring a collection of over 20 house-infused gins. These infusions use a wide array of ingredients, including teas, fruits, nuts, and even cured meats, allowing for creative and complex cocktails.
  • Andalusian Inspiration: The venue aims to capture the spirit of traditional Spanish village saloons, where people gather for drinks and conversation over small plates.
  • Atmosphere and Decor: The interior has a snug, convivial feel with a lot of wood, vintage movie posters, and legs of jamón Ibérico hanging from the ceiling, contributing to an old-world charm. It’s often described as a cozy, hidden gem tucked away from the main South Beach bustle.

History

Tropezón opened in late 2021 and is a concept from Lost Boy & Co. co-founders Randy Alonso and Chris Hudnall (the team behind Lost Boy Dry Goods). It is situated within the Esmé Miami Beach hotel complex on Española Way. The goal was to introduce the culture of Andalusian dining—a cuisine rooted in Arabic, African, and Mediterranean influences—to Miami Beach, with a focus on shared tapas and the Spanish gin tradition.

Highlight Menu Items

The menu is primarily focused on tapas (small plates) meant for sharing, with some larger entrees:

Tapas Favorites:

  • Pan Con Tomate: Bread with grated plum tomato, garlic, and sherry.
  • Tortilla Española: Traditional Spanish omelet, often served with caramelized onion, jamón, and tomato jam.
  • Patatas Bravas: Crispy potatoes with aioli and pimentón (Spanish paprika).
  • Gambas Al Ajillo: Shrimp in spicy garlic, chili, and cognac.

Larger Plates (Paellas & Platos):

  • Paellas: Variations often include Seafood, Vegetarian, and Carnes (like Duck Confit, Steak, and Chorizo).
  • Cochinillo: Roasted suckling pig.
  • Cowboy Ribeye: Often served with a unique seasoning like a five-spice coffee rub.

Drinks:

  • House-Infused Gins & Gin & Tonics: Creative variations using their house-infused gins, such as Yuzu & Blue Matcha Gin or those featuring Florida Citrus or Sour Cherry.
  • Sherry and Vermouth: An extensive selection to complete the authentic Spanish bar experience.

Customer Feedback

Customer feedback generally highlights:

  • Excellent Cocktails: The gin program, particularly the infused gins and G&Ts, is frequently praised as outstanding and a must-try.
  • Vibrant Atmosphere: The cozy, authentic Spanish saloon vibe and location on the pedestrian Española Way are often cited as a draw.
  • Quality Tapas: Guests enjoy the delicious and often refined versions of classic Spanish tapas dishes.

The restaurant also has several popular weekly offerings, such as:

  • Weekday Happy Hour
  • Tapas Tuesdays (offering all tapas at a special price)
  • Vino Wednesdays (half-off select bottles of wine)
  • Endless Paella Sundays

Significant Events

While a relatively newer establishment, Tropezón regularly hosts special events and initiatives that draw local attention, such as:

  • Local Vices Pre-Fixe Menu: A four-course pre-fixe menu designed to offer locals a chance to sample the new menu at an affordable price, promoting a neighborhood feel.
  • Collaborations: The restaurant has been noted for successful culinary partnerships, such as with Chef Jimmy Lebron (formerly of 27 Restaurant) to refresh its menu offerings.
